What could be more exciting than a ribbon-cutting for a new public elementary school right here in Mission Bay! San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) will conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday, Aug. 6, at 10 AM, at 1415 Owens Street.
The first day of school is on Monday, Aug. 17. Excitingly, this first day of school for the 2026-27 school year district-wide will be the first day of classes ever for the long-awaited Mission Bay Elementary School.
This is an important milestone for SFUSD and the Mission Bay community.
It took a more than decade-long advocacy effort by local neighborhood leaders, with strong support from community members in Mission Bay and beyond, to ensure that a public elementary school was constructed in the redevelopment project area, as set forth in the 1998 master plan for Mission Bay.
The school will serve adjacent eastern neighborhoods that are also experiencing population growth, particularly among families with kindergarten or elementary school-aged children, thanks to the new housing that’s being constructed in our corner of San Francisco.
We live in a dynamic neighborhood that’s more willing to embrace change than most, y’all! Let’s go, Mission Bay!

Town Hall Recording Posted Online
San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) has posted a link to the virtual Town Hall they conducted on June 18, in which they provided the latest update on the Mission Bay School Access Plan and their refined design concepts for the traffic circle adjacent to the new elementary school.
The Town Hall marked Outreach Round 3, the third and final round of public outreach to recap SFCTA’s progress and share findings from Round 2. Mission Bay Blvd Couplets Get Some Love
San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) reports the following for their portion of the Mission Bay School Access Plan, involving Mission Bay Boulevards North & South:
Construction of school signage, yellow-painted school zone crosswalks, and stop signs has been completed!
Speed tables were being constructed by crews one block at a time and completed on Mission Bay Boulevard South between Fifth and Sixth streets on July 16. On July 21, crews were expected to begin constructing the speed table on Mission Bay Boulevard South between Fourth and Fifth streets. From July 22-24, the remaining two locations on Mission Bay Boulevard North between Fourth and Sixth streets, were to be completed. Temporary street closures were necessary.
The bike lane delineators are still anticipated to be installed in the next two weeks before the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
